DOT to replace bridge in Sussex Borough

A project to replace a nearly 90-year-old bridge in Sussex Borough is expected to take up to 33 months to complete.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation held an informal meeting on April 9 at the Sussex-Wantage Library to answer questions regarding the proposed bridge replacement project.

The current single-span bridge, built in 1926, crosses a branch of the Wallkill River, south of the Double S Diner and Sussex Bike and Sport Shop.

DOT consultants from Greenman Pedersen, Inc., answered residents' questions and showed maps of the proposed location. Less than 20 people attended the informational meeting.

Bernie Boerchers, one of the engineers, told residents the estimated cost for the bridge is around $2.9 million; the estimated construction start is the spring of 2016; and it should be completed in about 33 months. The project will be federally funded through the United States Department of Transportation.

Part of the difficulty regarding the new bridge is that gas, water, and sewer lines go under Route 23 and under the bridge. All lines will be moved under the river, with precautions being taken to avoid wildlife.

The project is in the Final Design phase, which will lead to the bid process for contractors.

Also, a temporary bridge will be available during construction in order to always provide a North and South lane open for traffic on Route 23.
