Wantage resident wins excellence award

PARAMUS — Bergen Community College professor Michael Redmond, a resident of Wantage Township, has held numerous titles during his 33 years at the institution — dean and executive vice president among them. He recently added another designation to the list: 2014-15 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award honoree.

“I learned fairly early in my career what a community college is really about and I came to value the mission,” Redmond said. “NISOD is about recognizing people on campus who have been especially instrumental in promoting student success. It’s an honor to be recognized in the classroom.”

A philosophy professor, Redmond began at Bergen as an adjunct in 1981. Shortly after earning a full-time faculty position, Redmond shifted to an administrative role: dean of humanities. This dynamic, serving the institution in both academic and administrative capacities, would become a trademark of Redmond’s career.

As an early adopter of emerging information technology, his expertise led to other roles outside the classroom such as chief information officer. Later in his career, Redmond became one of the highest-ranking officials in the college’s leadership cabinet as executive vice president.

Redmond will travel to Austin, Texas next month to receive the award at the group’s annual international conference.
