Police: Suspect hospitalized after crash

    A 25-year-old township man could face charges after recovering from injuries sustained in a crash on Route 94 after fleeing from police on early Friday morning.

    Police were disptached to a report of an erratic driver in the area of Route 94 and Dunkin Donuts. Police said they located Jose Ortiz in the parking lot of the Dunkin Donuts and conducted a motor-vehicle stop.

    Police said they asked Ortiz to pull over his vehicle, and attempted to walk back to his patrol car when Ortiz is alleged to have fled the scene traveling south on Route 94 at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles over the double-yellow line.

    Police said they were waved down by police and informed of a crash on Route 94, where police allege Ortiz crashed into two other vehicles on Route 94.

    Ortiz was flown was flown by medivac to St. Joseph’s Hospital. Police said there is no information regarding the status of the occupants of the other motor vehicles involved in the crash.

    Police said charges pending the outcome of the investigation.

    The incident is being investigated by the Vernon police, Sussex County Prosecutors office, and the Sussex County Crash team. The Vernon, McAfee and Highland Lakes fire departments assisted on the scene, along with the Vernon Township Ambulance Squad.
