Institutions throughout the county are invited to sound their bells at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, for four minutes to mark the 150th anniversary of the end of th Civil War.

Churches, schools, historic sites, municipalities and any institution that has a bell can participate.

Sussex County sent about 1,256 men to the war, including at least 41 from Deckertown (Sussex) and 18 from Wantage, according to Mario Poggi of the Sussex-Wantage Historical Society. Of the men sent by Sussex County, 276 were either killed in action, died of disease or were wounded and/or disabled. That is 22 percent of the men sent to fight.

Poggi said he also is invited anyone with access to a bell to ring it four times at that time, one for each year of the war, to remember all those from Sussex County that fought and especially to honor those who died or were wounded.

For more information you can go to the National Parks Service website and search "Bells across the land".
