Vernon celebrates Walking Day

Vernon Township residents joined millions of Americans in celebration of National Walking Day with the American Heart Association.

Physical inactivity is a huge national problem, with 80 percent of adult Americans not getting enough physical activity.

Vernon Township's Recreation Director, Missi Wiedbrauk, initiated 'walking meetings' with her team about 6 months ago.

"Why have meetings sitting down when we can all meet at the park and get some fresh air and physical activity?" Wiedbrauk said. "We get to share ideas and it seems everyone leaves the meeting in a better mood, making for a more productive day."

Any residents looking to challenge themselves to run their first 5k should join the Vernon Couch to 5K Program beginning on April 21. Sign up at vernon.recdesk.com.
