Legislation to rename a 10-mile section of Rt. 15 in Sussex County after the late state Senator Robert E. Littell received unanimous approval from the Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee last week.

Littell, who died in November, was a state legislator for 40 years, serving in both the assembly and senate. He was also a Franklin Borough Council trustee and a Korean War veteran.

"Senator Littell was dedicated not only to the constituents he represented, but all of New Jersey,” said Assemblyman Parker Space, who is co-sponsoring the bill.

“His commitment to public service is an example to everyone that you can make a difference. Senator Littell loved his family and this great state. We can never truly thank him for his many contributions to New Jersey, but seeing his name on Rt. 15 will always remind us of someone who cared deeply about helping people.”

Littell's daughter, Assemblywoman Alison Littell McHose (R-Franklin), currently represents Sussex County in the assembly.

McHose has announced she will step down at some point. She was appointed as administrator of Franklin at the start of the year but continues to hold onto her assembly seat.

“The Littell family is well-known for its commitment to serving in government,” said Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll, R-Morris and Somerset. “Senator Littell was a tireless and devoted statesman. His constituency extended well beyond Sussex County, but throughout all of New Jersey. Serving the public for over four decades is testimony to the respect, trust and confidence the senator earned from his constituents.”

“Senator Littell and my father served together for many years in the state Senate and on the budget committee” said Assemblyman Anthony Bucco, R-Morris and Somerset.

“He will always be remembered as a devoted husband and father. Words cannot adequately express our appreciation for his service and contributions that make New Jersey a better place to live. Route 15 is an important highway in Sussex County and there is no better way to have a lasting memory of Sen. Littell than to name a portion of that road in his honor.”

State Senator Steve Oroho is sponsoring a companion bill in the senate.
