    Elizabeth Chivil, 87, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2015, after a brief illness.

    Known as Betty to family and friends, Elizabeth was born on Sept. 2, 1927, to the late James Joseph and Mary (nee Given) Sullivan. She grew up in Springfield, Mass., with sisters Eileen and Claire, and brothers, George, Bill, Bobby, Jim, and Franny. She graduated from Northeastern University in 1950, one of only three women in her graduating class. She went on to receive her master's degree from Montclair State University in 1974.

    Elizabeth was a resident of Bloomfield, N.J., for 15 years and a longtime resident of Vernon, N.J. After teaching for many years, she most recently worked for Middleton Insurance in Newton, NJ, as a personal lines underwriter. A eucharistic minister, she worshiped at St. Francis de Sales R.C. Church in Vernon.

    Elizabeth is survived by her son William J. Chivil, Jr., and his wife, Veronica, of Bloomfield, as well as by their three children, her cherished granddaughters Ariella, Amanda, and Adriana Chivil, and by many other nieces and nephews.

    She was predeceased by her husband William J. Chivil Sr. in 1987.

    The family will receive their friends and relatives on Tuesday, March 24 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Ferguson-Vernon Funeral Home 241 Rt. 94, (use 1 Vanderhoof Ct., Vernon, NJ for GPS). A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales R.C. Church, Vernon, N.J.
