The Vernon Township Board of Education will display the artwork of Cedar Mountain Primary School students in an exhibit entitled, “Cave Paintings and Petroglyphs.”

After studying ancient art in Scholastic Art Magazine, Joanne Portner’s third graders used the organic shapes of items found in nature to include in their own artwork. The students compared the techniques of “adding pigment” versus “subtracting pigment,” while observing ancient art found on cave walls and scratched rock formations. Inspired by these contrasting techniques, the students created charcoal drawings to follow the tradition of ancient cave paintings and, conversely, scratched out images to mimic the techniques of the historic petroglyphs.
