Sussex to watch state sewage authority bill

    Sussex Borough Council President Linda Masson reported a pending piece of state regional sewage authority legislation she believes the council needs to watch on Feb. 3.

    Masson reported that at the Jan. 21 Sussex County Municipal Utilities meeting, the board discussed a state Senate Bill which would require state oversight of regional sewage authority budgets by the director of local government services and the governor. The municipal authority could only increase the budget year to year by 2 percent, unless emergency expenses were declared and approved.

    The SCMUA board did not like that allowed budget increases would be limited to no more than 2 percent each year, because it has different contracts with each municipality.

    The bill is co-sponsored by state Sens. Steve Oroho of District 24 and Senator Brian Stack of District 33. On Jan. 15, , the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee voted 5–0 in favor of the bill.

    Council tables generator contract

    The only reason the Sussex Borough Council tabled a planned generator service contract inspection for $2,100 was because it needed more information. Councilman Robert Holowach said, he was

    "I was hesitant not to do this," he said. "Our luck doesn't seem to do us justice."

    The boiled water advisory has been lifted, which was put into effect because of an unused water main being put back into use along the area of the Loomis Avenue Bridge.

    Finally, there will be a special council meeting on Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. SussNo formal action will be taken.
