VERNON — If cabin fever is starting to set in, Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge is offering a number of activities to remedy that.

On Sunday, Feb. 8, people are invited on a Winter Wildlife Search on the Winding Waters Trail. The walk starts from the trail parking lot next to the river on Oil City Road, Pine Island, New York at 1 p.m.

The winter landscape will reveal clues as to where the animals are and what they have been doing. People are welcome to bring snow shoes for the walk.

On Wednesday, Feb. 11, people looking to get some fresh air and easy exercise can join the Wednesday Walkers on the Timberdoodle Trail.

Meet at the trail parking lot on Bassetts Bridge Rd, Sussex, N.J., at 12:30 p.m. The level trail travels through the woods and alongside wetlands for a pleasant walk surrounded by nature.

On Sunday, Feb. 15, the Friends of Wallkill River are looking for volunteers to help with the Great Backyard Bird Count.

This annual international survey of birds invites people around the world to contribute information on what birds are seen and how many. The count will be conducted at refuge headquarters, 1547 County Rd. 565 in Sussex, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

People can watch birds come to the feeder from the warmth of the building while gathering tips on attracting birds to the yard. A walk to search for birds in the area will be guided at 12 Noon. No experience is required and new birders are encouraged.

Children can sign up to make a treat for the birds to take with them. The bird feeder workshop will be held at 1 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $2 per child for the workshop.

In case of bad weather the bird count will be postponed to Monday, Feb 16, and a notice will be posted on the Friends Facebook page.

Dress warmly for the outdoor activities and come prepared for snow on the trails.
