Refuge offers hunting chance for disabled sportsmen

Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge recently partnered with the National Wild Turkey Federation to provide its first-ever hunting opportunity for Wounded Warriors and other permanently disabled sportsmen.

The two-day event offered these sportsmen the opportunity to practice at a shooting range, and spend a day in the woods with assistance for game recovery and free deer processing, by the Newton High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) club.

The event returned to these men an opportunity rarely afforded due to mobility limitations.

Four separate chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) worked in partnership with refuge staff to ensure a safe and unique hunting experience. Assisted by volunteers from the Kittatinny Gobblers, Highlands and Spruce Run Chapters, the New Jersey State Chapter of NWTF donated four large portable deer blinds, chairs and propane heaters to facilitate the event. On each of two days, four disabled hunters participated in the afternoon hunt, preceded by a luncheon prepared by the NWTF. Refuge staff provided planning, assistance, and the hunt location. Most of the hunters had never hunted on the refuge before, and some came as far as Atlantic City to participate in the event.

The Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge now maintains two areas reserved for special hunts such as these. For years, the refuge has reserved a refuge parcel for disabled hunters possessing a state "hunt from a vehicle" permit.

With the recent acquisition of a 167-acre farm, the refuge is now able to promote additional special hunting opportunities for disabled, mentored youth and women. January's disabled hunt was the second such event held since the property was purchased in fall 2014; a mentored youth deer hunt was held in November. Future plans include a mentored spring youth turkey hunt and a continuation of this year's programs.
