Former Sussex County Community College Board Chairman Glenn Gavan has been named judge of the Wantage Municipal Court.

The joint municipal court covers the towns of Wantage, Sussex and borough of Stillwater.

Gavan resigned from the college board this past summer after it was revealed that he had served as attorney for CP Engineers, a firm which received more than $800,000 worth of contracts for work at Sussex County Community College. Gavan also used office space at a building owned by the firm.

The engineering firm had also put together bids for a renovation of the student center, which has an estimated cost of more than $3.3 million.

Gavan was one of three board members who disclosed that they had business dealings with the firm, including Glen Vetrano, who worked as a consultant for the engineering firm.

Gavan will be paid $36,000 to serve as judge, according to Wantage Township Administrator James Doherty.

He is replacing former Judge Craig Diana, who retired after 41 years on the bench.

The three-member town committee appointed Gavan on Jan. 8 at its reorganizational meeting.

Doherty referred questions about the appointment to Wantage Mayor Bill Gaechter. Gaechter could not immediately be reached for comment.
