High Point, Sparta to play in charity game

High Point Regional High School host for the 5th Annual Pretty in Pink Classic on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m.

High Point will face off against Sparta High School in an independent contest that will feature both teams dressed in Pink and White uniforms.

Last year's Breast Cancer Charity game raised more than $18,000 for the Susan G. Komen and Cecelia's Angel Funds and was played in front of a standing-room only crowd in the High Point gym.

The game was the idea of High Point graduate Taylor Smith, who saw Rutgers and Tennessee play a pink game and thoughtit would be great to bring a similar game to Sussex County.

Senior forward April Peterson is looking forward to the game.

"This game is the highlight of our season," she said. "It is so much fun to play in front of a sold out gym with everyone cheering. I am also proud that we are able to raise a lot of money for such a special cause".

High Point Coach Chris Dexter explains a new twist to the Pretty in Pink game that started last year.

"We thought it would be fun to recreate the feeling of a Big 5 game at the Palestra in Philadelphia, where fans throw toilet paper onto the floor after the first basket. We tried it last year and everyone said it was exciting and a fun twist to the game. We don't throw toilet paper though. This year the fans will toss 800 pink and white streamers after High Point or Sparta scores the first basket".

As part of the night's festivities, someone from the crowd will get a chance to take a "Shot for the Cure," sponsored by Newton Toyota, with a chance to win a down payment on a new car and large donation to the breast cancer charities.

The 5th through 8th grade travel basketball teams from both Sparta and High Point will be on hand and dressed in pink to welcome the teams onto the floor at the start of the game and to help with the halftime tribute to cancer survivors.

All of the money raised from ticket sales, sponsors for the game's program, t-shirt sales, 50/50 raffle and the Shot for the Cure will go directly to cancer charities. For more information on the game and to get tickets, contact the athletic departments at High Point or Sparta High Schools.
