Anthony Freda is passionate about health and physical fitness, and it's this lifetime of passion that led him and his wife, Janessa, to open Alpha Fitness last month in the DePasquale Plaza in Newton.

It's a progressive gym with state-of-the-art equipment that blends traditional fitness ideologies with modern innovations to create a one-of-a-kind, one-stop, all-about-fitness center.

"I believe that exercise is a tool that can be used to transform a person’s mind and spirit even more than their bodies," Anthony said. "When my wife and I were exploring the idea of opening Alpha Fitness, we quickly realized that our own town was in great need of a quality gym with owners that truly care."

A High Point High School graduate, Anthony graduated from Seton Hall University and has been in the fitness industry ever since. When it came to creating the gym, the Fredas wanted to be as hands on as possible, so they selected Newton, the town in which they also live, for the location.

"Every person that enters their doors becomes a part of Team Alpha," said Freda. "We want to be involved in and a part of the fitness journey that each person is on. When you are training at our gym you will see me working out right alongside you each and every day, striving towards my personal fitness goals as well."

The gym is based on the goal of providing "un-paralleled service, facility, programs and equipment to inspire everyone to meet their maximum potential."

The facility
Located in two sections of a outside mall area on Clinton Street, Alpha Fitness consists of two floors of specific workout areas. The first level offers an extensive cardio area including several types of state-of-the-art cardiovascular training and related equipment such as treadmills, elliptical trainers, arc trainers, stationary exercise bikes, and rowing machines.

It also includes top-of-the-line selectorized equipment, rubberized dumbbells ranging from five to 100 pounds, and a customized seven-station cable cross machine.

Alpha Fitness' modern group classroom offers an array of group exercise classes delivered by top instructors in the industry. Classes include but are not limited to Spin, High Intensity Interval Training, Kettle Bell Training, Tabata, Step, Yoga, PiYo, and Zumba.

"The second level offers the county’s largest selection of free weight equipment," Anthony said.

It also has two sets of dumbbells ranging from five to 225 pounds, more than 50 pieces of top-of-the-line free weight equipment and a boxing room complete with heavy bags, battle ropes and speed bags.

"We put a lot of time and effort into the detailed layout of our fitness center," Anthony said.

In keeping with the passion for fitness throughout the gym, the Fredas have many inspirational quotes on the walls along with their color design following a red/black/white theme.

"We focused greatly on the details," Anthony said.

"It’s very important that we are recognized as a gym that remembers the importance of where gyms started meaning, we specifically designed the large free weight area with metal weights and unique strength equipment because we believe that is the essence of fitness," Anthony added. "The sound of clanging weights is forgotten in today’s gym environment. The upper level has all the modern gym amenities; contemporary group classroom design, rubberized weights, cable training systems (TRX, etc), and state of the art cardiovascular equipment."

Alpha Fitness offers a number of membership options. Their web site is currently being created, so visit www.facebook.com/alphafitnessnj or stop by the gym for information.
