Public workers shouldn't need bonuses for motivation

Vernon Council members Ms. Murphy and Mr. Kadish are to be commended for not supporting a resolution authorizing a committee to consider bonuses. It appears that they understand the difference between good government and slick politics.

Municipal department heads are obligated to do their jobs as public servants and the vast majority of all Vernon's employees are hard working professionals. Non-financial public recognition is acceptable and is an effective incentive for outstanding performance.

A basic difference between private and public sectors is that government takes money by taxes, and business generates money and can share the profits. Furthermore, research shows that employees are more motivated by intrinsic reinforcement than extrinsic rewards.

Municipal workers and elected officials should be carefully scrutinized if financial bonuses that go beyond their contractual salaries are needed for motivation. True public servants and government leaders understand the words of Douglas Adams, To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity.
