The first ice storm arrived in the township on Tuesday with the most effect being at higher elevations.

According to the Vernon Township Police Dept.'s Facebook page, the storm was significant enough to close township schools with the issuance of an early morning announcement. Police reported the roads to be very icy although the road department was sanding the roadways.

Special warnings were issued to Highland Lakes, Barry Lakes, and Cliffwood Lake. In the far northeast corner of the township Warwick Turnpike was reported as being ice covered with traffic at a standstill. Problems also were reported on Breakneck and Canistear Roads, County Route 515, and Route 94.

The township’s tree lighting was also postponed until Thursday, Dec. 18 from 7-9 p.m. The web address for the department’s Facebook page is www.facebook.com/vernonpolice.
