When it comes to the Vernon High School girls; swim team, this season is about developing not only faster times, but learning strong technique in the variety of events as a group during each practice and competition.

There are some new faces on the Vikings' roster this winter, but the program has some very capable veterans, as well. If the newcomers and more experienced swimmers gel together, it could be a very productive season.

Key returning swimmers include Nicole Mitchell (junior, sprint freestyle/backstroke events), Emily Rothamel (sophomore, individual medley/freestyle), Katie Owens (sophomore, individual medley/freestyle) and Madison Gigante (sophomore, sprint freestyle).

The newcomers for the Vikings this year are Jessica Mitchell (freshman, sprint freestyle) and Paige Riker (individual medley/distance freestyle).

“We are a very young team, mostly underclassmen," Vernon coach Jennifer Baldwin said. “I will look to junior Nicole Mitchell and sophomore Emily Rothamel to use their experience in this sport to lead the team, as well as a solid sophomore class to continue to grow and add depth to our roster. I am hopeful these girls will assist me in polishing and expanding their new teammate’s skills."

Baldwin said she would like to see the team grow as swimers and individuals this season.

"I would like to see my returning varsity swimmers improve their times from last season and I would like my new athletes to be able to continue to improve from their first meet throughout the season," she said. "My goal is for lots of growth while developing a bigger understanding and love for our sport."

On Thursday, Dec. 11, the Vikings have a meet scheduled versus Hackettstown. Two days later, they are slated to face Mount Olive. Both meets will take place at Kittatinny High School.

“I think this year the girls will continue to improve from previous season and that they are in the right direction of heading towards the top of Sussex County swimming," Baldwin said.
