Vernon Township High School’s English II Honors students recently engaged in an interactive Skype session with Monika Elbert, Montclair State University professor and Nathaniel Hawthorne expert.

School Media Specialist Steve Denn and English II Honors instructor Marc Bray arranged the virtual field trip as a culminating activity for the class study of Hawthorne’s classic The Scarlet Letter and as a preview of the annual autumn trip the class took to Salem and Concord, Mass.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to interact with a college professor and engage in intellectual discourse with someone outside of the classroom," Bray said. "I look forward to having more sessions like this one.”

“I found it interesting to hear all the behind the scenes relationships between all the authors that we are studying this year,” sophomore Olivia Higgins said,

Events like this are part of Vernon Township High School’s push to infuse technology into the classroom. Mr. Denn said, “This is the first of many Skype lessons we are planning for the school year.”
