Students with the group Lounsberry Cares, led by sixth-grade teacher Peggy Mitchell, at Lounsberry Hollow Middle School, in Vernon encouraged the staff and students to wear pink to show support for a cure for breast cancer.

All donations were sent to the Avon Foundation by Karen Kaspirowicz-Craner; eighth-grade teacher at Glen Meadow Middle School; who has participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in New York for the last 12 years.

The 12th annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer took place this year on Oct. 18-19, raising $7 million to accelerate breast cancer research; improve access to screening, diagnosis and treatment; and educate people about breast cancer.

The walk in New York was the seventh of eight 2014 Avon Walks across the country.

This year's walk attracted nearly 3,000 participants from 41 states and Washington, D.C., as well as 5 counties including Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. In addition, 376 breast cancer survivors and 442 men joined together to raise lifesaving funds for breast cancer.
