Little, Holowach win in Sussex Borough
There was some turnover Tuesday night on the Sussex Borough Council as challengers Katherine Little — a Democrat — and Robert Holowach — a Republican finished first and second respectively in the voting to claim the two council seats up for election.
Voters also turned down Proposal 1, asking for the public's approval on a possible sale of the water and sewer utility to Aqua, New Jersey for about $11.4 million by a 281-162 margin. Voters did, however, approve proposition 2 asking whether to establish a trust for the excess money from the sale by a 244-199 meeting.
Borough administrator Mark Zaschak said the voters' rejection of Proposal 1 kills the possible sale of the water, sewer utility and keeps it in the borough's hands, and it makes the passage of Proposition 2 irrelevant.
"The deal cannot go through with the no vote," Zaschak said.
Little gained the most votes in the borough (256) and Robert Holowach had 205. Democrat Albert L. Decker finished third (184) and incumbent Republican Council President Marina Krynicki was last with 175 votes. Councilman Salvatore Laggattuta did not seek re-election.
The incumbents carried the day on the Vernon Township School District Board of Education as Vice President Cynthia Auberger (2,803) and board member Edward DeYoung (2,506) were re-elected to the board. Robert Walsh gained 2,282 votes to grab the third available seat on the board. Challengers Justine Van Blarcom, Robert A. Oliver and Thomas S. Friesema finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.
High Point Regional High School Board of Education President Paul Derin was re-elected to the board, beating challenger William F. Kehoe, 1,242,1,121.
On the county level, incumbent Republican Phillip Crabb won re-election over Democrat William Weightman, 23,960-11,316.
