    Joseph James Curtis, 70 years old, died after a short illness at his residence on Sunday, Nov. 2. Born to John and Helen Curtis in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived in Brooklyn before moving to the Highland Lakes section of Vernon Twp., N.J., in 1978.

    Joseph served with the United States Navy with the Sea Bees during the Vietnam War. He then worked as a New York City Fireman and then Head of Security for the Highland Lakes Country Club and as a special police officer for Vernon Township. He worked as liquor manager at A&P in Woodland Park, NJ before retiring in 2006. Joseph was always recognized as the family’s handyman.

    Joseph was predeceased by 3 brothers, William, John and Gerard Curtis and was the beloved husband of Nancy Curtis (nee Reese) of Highland Lakes, N.J. Devoted father of Joseph James Curtis of Highland Lakes, N.J., Kevin Paul Curtis of Highland Lakes, N.J., and Amy Suzanne Monroe of Sparta, N.J. Dear brother of Elaine Loggi of Florida and Jennette Debello of Florida. Cherished by 8 grandchildren.

    The family will receive their friends at Ferguson-Vernon Funeral Home, 241 Route 94(1 Vanderhoof Court for GPS), Vernon, N.J., on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
