Republicans have deserted the people

I was pleased that you printed my letter asking Republicans to realize that their party has deserted them to serve only the wealthy corporate leaders and to vote Democratic on Nov. 4, and then to meet to re-establish their party as one who serves all who believe in conservative spending and sensible compromise with other politicians to see that our national government is functioning. Since that letter I have received a number of phone calls agreeing with what I said.

Nevertheless, there are always the extremist Republicans such as Mr. Anderson who use distorted “facts” to deny the obvious. When his letter was printed in your paper to respond to my letter, he was either not as honest as I am, or most likely at least not as smart.

Mr. Anderson, fundraising events are more necessary than ever due to the extreme amounts of money that go automatically to Republicans since Citizens United. Why would you not want to change the law so that only voting citizens can make such political donations and so that every dollar donated must be part of the public record?

Also, in your letter, were you denying global warming and climate change as a result of excessive use of fossil fuels? The only scientists who do not agree with this are the very few who work for the fuel industry. No one with a brain would disagree with the obvious.

And you speak about using facts? Every fact I cited regarding the success of the Obama administration is simple truth. And the president deserves much respect for what he accomplishes despite the obstruction of Republicans such as yourself.

Regarding Obamacare, more properly called the Affordable Care Act: Without it, many, many people with pre-existing conditions could not get insurance at all. That it plays a bit too much with health insurance corporate interests is because this first universal health care law ever passed in the United States was, of course, a compromise with corporate-interest Republicans. We all hope for needed improvements over time, but this is a big improvement over what was.

And regarding immigration: What the administration is doing is what it can since the Republican House will not pass needed immigration reform.

In your letter, Mr. Anderson, you state that conservatives want to live without “government interference” but that is an invitation for the greedy to continue to grow their income at the expense of both our people and our environment.

So again, I encourage all of my Republican friends, and all Republicans, for that matter, to vote Democratic this time and then re-invent your party to work without obligation to wealthy corporate interests. And I will continue to define treason as any effort to take our government away from our people.
