Never too young to learn about fire safety

The boys and girls got to try on Bob Winter’s coat and helmet.

VERNON — The children at the Footprints Montessori School were treated to a visit by Vernon Valley Lake resident and Allendale Volunteer Fireman Bob Winter on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
With the help of school director Bjorg Boschen and an assistant, the children were taught about fire safety, and firefighters’ protective equipment and what to do in case of a fire. This included crawling through a potentially smoke filled room to safely feel whether there may be heat and fire on the other side of a closed door.
To aid is his explanation of firefighters’ gear he brought a small firefighter doll and used it to explain the heavy fire-resistant clothing and even an oxygen tank mounted to the figurine’s back.
