Vernon council stops Camp Sussex appraisal

The Vernon Township Council did not pass a resolution to allow Mayor Victor Marotta to begin negotiations with three appraisers to assess the fair-market value of the property.

The council voted 2-2 on the resolution. Council President Brian Lynch was absent.

With the recent court ruling blocking an ordinance that would put the purchase of Camp Sussex to referendum, the council and mayor has resumed discussion on potentially purchasing the property.

Councilwoman Jean Murphy asked why the township was pursing three appraisers.

In general, two appraisals are made and a third is requested when there is a significant difference in appraisal amounts.

“This is the first step in doing our due diligence," Marotta said.

Marotta noted that the New Jersey Land Conservancy had pledged a $150,000 donation to the township for the purchase of the property, but, in order to receive the funds the purchase must meet the requirements for a Green Acres Grant.

“I think it’s a step in the right direction.” Councilman Dick Wetzel said.

Murphy also questioned whether the tax bills on the property were current, to which Marotta informed the council that they were not.

“(The taxes) are not current.” said Marotta, “The owners will have to bring the taxes by December.”
