Mining class planned at musuem

    The Sterling Hill Mining Museum, 30 Plant St., Ogdensburg, will host a mining history class from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 15.

    Guests are asked to arrive at the museum gift shop at 9 a.m.

    Former miner and geologist Ron Mishkin, on staff at the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, will present the role of mining throughout history and today with emphasis on the 300-year history of mining in New Jersey. The class eligible for professional development credit. All facets of H-STEAM will be provided to give educators the background of mines in America.

    Mishkin will discuss how ore bodies were discovered and developed, exploration techiques, where mining towns grew, key inventions in explosives, drills, fuses, and safety equipment. He also will discuss mining methods and technology, famous mines and the prospectors that described them, the difference between coal and metal mines, including environmental hazards, silicosis and black lung disease, and accident statistics. The history of iron and zine in New Jersey also will be discussed.

    The cost will be $15 adult, $10 seniors, age 60 and older. Pay at arrival.
