Sussex spends $10K on water/sewer utility repairs

The Sussex Borough Council unanimously approved spending no more than $10,700 to Agra Environmental and Laboratory Services on Oct. 7.

    Councilwoman Annette Stendor was absent.

The change responds to two emergencies at the Water/Sewer utility. First, the chlorination system piping broke and spilled. Next, another section of the chlorine line broke, and a 500-gallon fiberglass tank chlorine-storage tank cracked. The tank was constructed in the mid 1990s when the plant was constructed.

As of Oct. 7, Agra had already completed one repair.

In addition, an electric pump for the Decant System failed, and a rebuilt pump was switched in its place. Agra is looking to purchase another new pump, so that it wait on a shelf in the event of future problems.

The Decant System pump helps recirculate filtered backwash water and clear water in the treatment process.

    More money to satisfy DEP
The council also unanimously approved John P. McGowan of McGowan Well Water Compliance Management, as the special projects engineer to complete a report for the Sussex Borough Water Dept.

McGowan will complete a technical, managerial, and financial evaluation of the Sussex Borough Water Dept., per the Department of Environmental Protection. The evaluation will not exceed $4,750.

McGowan has already completed 20 evaluations of this type.

Mayor Jonathan Rose said he doubed the borough would get any value out of it.
