Math tutoring group meets at St. Thomas

A math tutoring group meets every other Thursday evening at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Vernon.

“Math isn’t just an academic problem for many kids, it is an emotional health issue, as well,” says St. Thomas’ Vicar, the Rev. Dr. Howard Whitaker. “If a student falls behind in math or foreign language at the beginning of the year, they can’t really catch up. And, it affects how they see themselves and everything else in their life.”

The meeting dates for the group are: Nov. 16 and 30; Nov. 13; Dec. 4 and 18. The group runs from 6-8 p.m. The group is proctored by an experienced math teacher.

The age and grade range runs from late elementary and middle school to honors pre-calculus. Students must bring their math book, a pencil and paper, and a parent. There are no “drop offs.” Parents must stay on the property. Coffee and wi-fi are available.

Donations will be appreciated, but no child will be turned away who wishes help.

“This is ministry, not fundraising,” Whitaker said. “The Prophet Jerimiah tell us to seek the welfare of the place in which we live. This is our way of giving back to the community and investing in its children.”
