YMCA to offer free membership to seventh graders

The Sussex County YMCA is calling all seventh-grade students to take advantage of its free seventh-grade membership offer.

The 7th Grade Initiative offers complimentary YMCA membership to 7th graders at participating YMCAs. This program was implemented to support and encourage teens to maintain and/or adopt healthy lifestyles at an age when they are beginning to make their own choice regarding health and wellness.

Seventh-graders will have the opportunity to participate in fun activities and events that promote healthy lifestyles. This free membership also includes an orientation to the Fitness Center and special free classes such as swim lessons, archery, Judo, Karate, Leaders Club, and more. Registration for the program is ongoing throughout the year.

“National research has shown that seventh grade is an important time for children to be physically active and gain life-long fitness and nutrition habits that will carry into adulthood,” states Jennifer Gardner, executive director of the Sussex County YMCA. “Studies also show that children ages 12 and 13 are the most impressionable and most at risk for dangers in their community.”

A parent or guardian must be present to complete the registration for seventh graders. Students must bring a report card showing completion of the sixth grade or current seventh grade enrollment or school ID.
