VERNON — In their attempt to remain at their current location in the downtown area, the Wallkill Valley VFW Memorial Post 8441 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars has been rallying local residents and businesses to help raise the much-needed funds — more than $20,000 — to pay for the post's hookup to the Vernon Township sewer system.

Saturday evening was the culmination of the first round of the community-wide effort to help the post stay afloat. With about 125 people attending, members offered their supporters an evening of entertainment, including a dinner of barbequed chicken, prepared by the Vernon Fire Department. Each attendee received a copy of a 24-page, full-color program that recognized those who have been coming to the VFW’s rescue, by way of donations and fundraising efforts.

Held at the VFW’s hall located at 313 Route 94, the evening included dancing with music provided by DJ Jim Hall. The evening also included a 50/50 raffle, which was won by Cathy Pra, who promptly donated back her winnings to the VFW as an additional contribution. Pra and her husband, Art, are already Gold Sponsors and long time supporters of the VFW. The couple are owners of Notchwood Landscape.
