King of the Mountain winners include local residents

VERNON — Sunday offered a perfect day for 133 serious mountain bike racers to descend on the slopes of Mountain Creek.

In the professional division, Jeff Lenosky of Sparta of the Giant Mavic team placed third in a field of 24 male professional racers. Surpassing that, Vernon resident Marla Streb of the Luna Chix team placed second in the women’s division. Several more racing events are on the calendar at Mountain Creek before ski season arrives.

The event was divided into four segments for the amateur division and five segments for the professionals. The segment that appeared to be least popular was when the racers were required to push their bikes all the way back to the top of the mountain. Coming down the 1,040 vertical-foot drop only took the racers around two minutes.

The walk back up took considerably longer.
