HAMBURG — The efforts of Sussex Elks Lodge No. 2288 and about 135 Home Depot volunteers brought tears to the eyes of Hamburg veteran George Alapka on Thursday when he and his wife Anita returned from a three-day mini vacation in the Poconos, courtesy of the Elks.

In the days he was away, the volunteers remodeled the interior of his home and included new fittings including flooring, cabinets, appliances, handicap accessible bathrooms, light fixtures and more.

Alapka was so moved that he made the rounds up and down the long lines of volunteers to thank each one individually. When he actually entered his home he was so overwhelmed that he knelt on the floor as he tried to absorb all the work that was done.
