Sussex-Wantage school completes summer projects

SUSSEX BOROUGH — Chris Swank, the Sussex-Wantage School District Building and Grounds supervisor, presented the status of completed summer projects to the Sussex-Wantage School Board on Aug. 27.

Swank said all rooms and halls have been deep cleaned in the three schools: Clifton E. Lawrence, Wantage Elementary, and Sussex Middle School. Floors also were stripped, scrubbed, and three coats of finish applied in the rooms, and five coats applied in the halls.

Various projects have been completed from: repairing damaged duct work, cleaning and inspecting boilers, completing footings for a new playground slide, painting various projects, pumping septic and grease tanks, replacing electronic sub panels, and clearing brush and weeds.

Pavement was also repaired near the solar panels in the parking lot at Sussex Middle School.

The solar panels are complete. Swank said he is waiting for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities' (BPU) approval.

The Sussex Middle School outside basketball court was edged and weeded, and is scheduled to have the cracks sealed and relined on Sept. 2.

Board Member Walter Krynicky said Sussex Borough donated $1,000 for the basketball court to be repaved.

Swank said he checked with a contractor who said the court is “not in that bad of condition.” The distrifct will save between $400 and $500 by doing the work internally.

In addition, the district plans to also do more grading, so that the court will stay in better condition.

Swank also said he will follow up with Sussex Borough regarding the court work.

Swank keeps a close eye on project management, completion and inspections.

Later, Swank said that the district tries to do a lot of projects inhouse, and the Sussex-Wantage School District is “very fortunate because of the skill set” available. The district has a “plumber, electrician and carpenter in house.”
