Vernon holds 4th annual National Night Out

Vernon Township Police Department K9 Officer Cpl. William Gebhard and Police Dog Hobbs were a favorite with the children during the township’s fourth annual National Night Out.
Vernon Township High School Student Council officers Ben Anderson (president), Kendall Cook (vice president), and James Freeman (secretary and Viking mascot) sold lollipops during the event.
The kids lined up for the PAL inflatable slide that was set up for the evening.
Samantha VanHerwynen, 3, and her sister Kaitelyn, 11, of the Glenwood section of town enjoyed the swings in the playground.
VERNON — Although a few hundred family members turned out for the township’s fourth annual National Night Out, the weather forecasters won another bet as several lightning flashes resulted in an early close to the evening at Maple Grange Park on Aug 5.
At about 9 p.m. when the film “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” was planned to begin, a heavy pocket of rain briefly traversed the northern areas of the township.
The nation-wide 31st annual anti-crime event is meant to discourage youngsters from experimenting with drugs and alcohol.
