Practice doesn't make perfect for local golfer

One of the most repeated quotes for athletes seeking to perfect their game is "practice makes perfect."

However at the fourth Crystal Springs Member Appreciation Tournament held on Wednesday, July 23, one participant in the Putting Contest wished he had never followed that popular piece of advice. Participants in the Putting Contest had the opportunity to practice their putts prior to competing with putts that counted in the competition, and as luck would have it, for one golfer the practice putt was holed out, but the practice was of no avail because he could not repeat the performance when it counted.

The Cascades/Crystal Springs Member Tournament kicked off with a shotgun start with the golfers competing for honors in three divisions, the Overall Division, Lady’s Division and the Senior Division for golfers over the age of 65. The golf event was followed by an awards ceremony and a buffet held in the Crystal Springs Grand Ballroom.

Following the competition, Crystal Springs Event Coordinator Joshua Chandler and his assistant, Maddy Chappini, tabulated the scorecards of the participating teams and handed out the awards and prizes to the best performers in the day’s event.

First Place in the Overall Division went to the team of Joseph Abood and John Guancione with a 6-under par score with the team of John Danckwerth and Gene Komorowski coming in second with a score of 4-under par. The team of MaryLou Nicoletti and Joan Huffine captured top honors in the Lady’s Division with a score of 88 while John Langraf and Richard Kay carded 1-under-par to win the Senior Division. The team of Bob Fice and Brian Clark came in second in the Senior Division.

The closest to the pin and long drive skill contests yielded prizes for Abelardo Viray for his closest to the pin shot which landed 2 feet 11 inches from the cup on Village hole No. 5 and John Kochan for his shot on Cascades No. 4. Honors for Men’s long drive went to Steve Pezzino and to MaryLou Nicoletti for the ladies. The Senior Division Long Drive champion was Feliz Sentak. After coming in 2nd in the Putting Contest at last month’s tournament, Alvin Viray was able to hole out a putt in this month’s contest to win.

The prize winners in the Fourth Member Appreciation Tournament qualify for the Member Appreciation championship held at the end of the 2014 golf season.
