Dogs washed for good cause

The Dog Owners Gathering Society of Vernon Township held its 8th Annual Dog Wash on Saturday at the Vernon Township Firehouse on Route 515 in the Town Center.

Due to scheduling conflicts and as a departure from previous events, nail clipping and micro-chipping were not included in the day’s offerings and will instead be available in the early fall.

According to DOGS President Barbara Green, nearly 50 dogs came for their baths that included a washing cycle, rinsing cycle, and a drying cycle with “body shaking” optional. All proceeds will go toward maintaining the Vernon Dog Park, which is now in its second year of operation.

Coming up soon for the organization will be a beefsteak dinner on Saturday, Aug. 16 from 7-10 p.m. at the Highland Lakes Firehouse on Canistear Road. Tickets are $40 and the evening is B.Y.O.B. There will be a 50/50 and a silent auction.

The Fire Dept. will be hosting the event as a fundraiser for the Vernon Dog Park. Profits go toward the upkeep and maintenance of the dog park, located off County Route 517 about a quarter mile west of the Someplace Special Square.
