State to give tax assessor exam in September

| 21 Jul 2014 | 03:46

The next New Jersey certified tax assessor examination will be Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014.

The deadline for filing applications for the exam is Aug. 21 at the Richard J. Hughes Justice Complex, 25 Market Street, 4th Floor Conference Room A, Trenton.

New Jersey tax professionals must have a Tax Assessor Certificate when they take office. Certificates are granted only to those who pass this examination.

Exams are offered twice each year — in March and September. Michael J. Bryan, director of the state Division of Taxation, said the purpose of the Assessor Certification and Tenure Act, which became law in 1967, is to ensure assessors and administrators are properly trained in property tax laws. The state wants to ensure it has sufficient numbers of trained, career professionals to maintain a uniform and fair property tax system.

To obtain an application for the assessor examination, write to Marilyn E. Gaines, P.O. Box 240, Trenton, N.J., 08695-0240 or call (609) 292-8823. Applicants also may fill out a PDF version of the application at http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/pdf/lpt/ac_1.pdf. A $10 fee must accompany the completed application.
