Girls on the Run New Jersey North will have its first team in Sussex-Wantage this fall. Girls on the Run is 501c3 youth development program with over 200 chapters in the United States, serving over 60,000 girls annually. The mission of the organization is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The Girls on the Run program serves girls in grades 3-5.

The 24 lesson curricula empowers girls with a greater sense of self-awareness, a sense of achievement, a foundation in team building and a commitment to enhancing their communities through community service. Lessons include topics to enable girls to effectively problem solve and remain strong during adolescence which can be a challenging time in a young girls life. Topics include dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer pressure, making healthy decisions, and contributing to the community. The running portion of the program is used as a modality to get the message across, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!

The 10 week program kicks off the week of September 8th and concludes with a 5k on November 15th at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta. The 5K is a celebration of the girl's season and a major source of pride and accomplishment.

Registration for the fall 2014 season will begin on Tuesday, July 29, at 7 p.m. Registration details and program information can be found at www.gotrnjn.org. The team will be meeting at the Clifton E. Lawrence School from 4-5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Girls must commit to attend both days of the session. Scholarships are available for girls who need them.
