Centenary Stage offers summer dance workshops for teens and adults

HACKETTSTOWN — The Centenary Stage Company is once again offering a variety of summer dance workshops July 8 to 10 at the Lackland Center in Hackettstown.

These workshops provide the dance community with affordable, high-quality dance instruction taught by masters in the field of dance, designed to introduce various styles and techniques taught at the collegiate level. This summer’s workshops are led by instructors from the renowned Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company (CDDC) for dancers ages 14 and up and will run from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening.

On Tuesday, July 8, Carolyn Dorfman herself will lead her dynamic signature class Modern Technique: The Art of Specificity. This class emphasizes center-driven movement, nuanced weight transfer, and musicality. Dorfman's classes explore the essence of solo and ensemble performance. On Wednesday, July 9 CDDC member Katlyn Waldo will lead a Pilates infused Dorfman technique class followed by repertory from Dorfman’s newest tour de force, Interior Designs, where technology and art meet, to create an unforgettably human experience. The workshops will close out on Thursday, July 10 with a Funk Jazz class led by CDDC member Brandon Jones. This vigorous, athletic and wildly fun Jazz technique class will incorporate elements of funk, street and other contemporary dance styles.

Carolyn Dorfman received her BFA in Dance with certification to teach grades K-12 from the University of Michigan and her MFA from New York University Tisch School for the Arts. Dorman has been designated a Distinguished Artist by the NJ State Council on the Arts, has received numerous recognitions and serves as a leader and instructor in organizations throughout New Jersey and New York.

Katlyn Waldo received her BA in Dance from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College after years of training in dance, gymnastics, and musical theatre. She has been a member of CDDC since 2011 and has danced with alangooddance, Nicholas Andre Dance, KDNY, and Michael Mao. Brandon Jones is a graduate of the Conservatory of Performing Arts at Point Park University. He has been a member of CDDC since 2011 and has trained in Aviv, Moscow, Bucharest, Amsterdam, and Brisbane. Currently, he teaches contemporary, lyrical, jazz and funk styles at dance schools in Central New Jersey, where he reside.

Tuition to participate in all three workshops is $165, with individual workshops at $60 per class. The registration deadline is June 30. Interested participants can contact the box office at 908-979-0900.
