As part of its ongoing commitment to encouraging water safety in the community, the Sussex County YMCA will its annual Swim, Play, Learn Aquatic Safety Habits program from April 21-25.

The program is a YMCA national initiative, committed to providing community outreach and providing aquatic safety and awareness education.

When most of us are enjoying time at the pool or beach, injuries aren’t the first thing on our minds. Yet, drowning is the leading cause of injury death for young children ages 1-4, and three children die every day as a result of drowning.

“Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children younger than 14. We believe all children should know how to swim and be safe in and around water at all times. That’s especially true in New Jersey with the many lakes, rivers, reservoirs and frequent summer time trips to the beach,” said Jennifer Gardner, executive director of the Sussex County YMCA.

Learning to swim is a critical safety skill for any child living near water. SPLASH is a water safety and basic swimming skills program offered free of charge at the Sussex County YMCA. Children learn basic swimming skills and practice safety habits while in and around water, which results in a sense of accomplishment and increased self-confidence and security while near water or in water. Since 2011, the SPLASH program in Sussex County has taught more than 3,000 youth to be at ease in water and learn basic water safety skills.

The Sussex County YMCA will continue its dedication to teaching water safety to local children by offering the SPLASH program the week of April 21st- 25th on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
