I want to ride my bicycle outside in the winter. What kind of clothing do I need to make this possible?

Outdoor winter riding is about layering. All of these layers are available at our stores. Let’s start at the top. Under the helmet you would want to wear a skull cap. Looks like a swimmers cap but made of thin micro-fleece. If you need to cover your face they also make a piece call a Balaclava (think ski mask). On the torso we want 2 main layers. The outer layer is a windproof barrier.

Cycling specific clothes are important here. Tops are made with longer arms so they don’t ride up and tails in the back so when you lean forward you don’t have a frozen plumbers crack (sorry plumbers…. It is the best description). Under the wind proofing is a thermal layer. This layer needs to breathe, be moisture wicking BUT hold your bodies warmth in.

On your legs we need one layer. It is technical clothing because it needs to be a wind shell and thermal all in one and you don’t want the bulk of say ski clothing. We have found our Bontrager brand of clothes we carry to be superior then other brands on the market.

Now it is time for the feet. On bike outdoor winter riding requires booties. These are slip-on overlays that are thin but are windproof and thermal. Keeping your feet warm is key to a great ride. Most people surrender early on an outdoor winter ride because the 10 little piggies are numb.
Now there are no excuses for not riding in cold weather. See you at the shop.
