Sticker Shock Campaign to prevent underage drinking

SPARTA — On May 23 Community Trials Intervention (CTI) Youth Leaders participated in a Sticker Shock Campaign at Burke’s Wine & Liquor Store in Sparta.

Sticker Shock is an event where youth, accompanied by an adult and with the permission of the liquor store, place stickers on cans and bottles of alcohol packaging to remind adults, older siblings and friends that providing alcohol to underage drinkers carries strict consequences and penalties.

The sticker state “Keep It Legal. It’s illegal to buy alcohol for youth under age 21. The penalty is up to 6 month jail time plus a $1000 fine.”

Together the youths aim to get the message out to “Keep It Legal” as they apply stickers, helping to reduce youth access to alcohol. This program is funded by the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) through a federal grant made possible by The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).
