Sarah Munley honored as 'Good Citizen'
VERNON The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) has named Misericordia University student Sarah Rose Munley of Vernon one of the eight recipients of the Commonwealth Good Citizen Scholarship.
Munley is a graduate of Vernon Township High School and the daughter of Mark and Patty Munley. She is working toward a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and is scheduled to graduate in May 2013.
AICUP, which represents 84 private colleges and universities across Pennsylvania, received 84 applications from full-time undergraduate collegians for the eight $1,500 scholarship awards.
The Commonwealth Good Citizen Scholarship is funded by two endowments established at AICUP for students who have shown an extraordinary commitment to community service and who have demonstrated creativity in shaping their volunteer activities.
At Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa., Munley is active on campus and in the regional communities of Northeastern Pennsylvania. She and her peers in Colleges Against Cancer recently raised $12,910 at its annual spring Relay for Life event. Through Peer Advocates, the students raised money for a local no-kill animal shelter at the second annual Misericordia Underdogs Time To Shine Dog Show. The Princess and the Prom clothing and accessory drive that was held on campus benefitted a lock-in for local high seniors. She was one of many Misericordia students who worked to raise awareness about homelessness and she participated in the Dublin, Ireland, Pilgrimage for Young Mercy Leaders. As a founding member of the student organization, College Kids for Girls, she provides mentoring and tutoring services for young girls in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
