Vernon — Changes to the Vernon Township Code now make it clear how recreational vehicles and equipment are to be stored. They are to be registered, carry current tags and must be owned by the resident on whose property it is kept. In addition, these vehicles should be in working order.

Vernon's zoning officer had problems previously when citing one person, who would then point the finger at a neighbor and demand to know: “Why are you picking on me?”

The problem, addressed initially in late March, stemmed from complaints about people who were keeping unregistered, nonworking recreational vehicles on their property.

Council member Pat Rizzuto spoke of the difficulties enforcing the township code about these vehicles. The new ordinance changing the code was brought to the council by the Land Use Board.

The new wording also says that when residents store these vehicles on their property, they must meet yard and setback requirements and stored in the rear or side yards. If the vehicle cannot be stored in a side or back yard, they may be kept in the front yard in a driveway, but cannot encroach onto the public right of way and/or 10 feet from the street line.

Only two recreational vehicles per property are permitted for outdoor storage. Additional vehicles may be kept in a garage. If a resident has a commercial vehicle on the property, they can only have one recreational vehicle. Covers and tarps for the vehicles are to be in neutral or earth tone colors and in good condition.
